Food Lover’s Market causes a stir in Norwood

On Thursday, the long-anticipated Food Lover’s Market opened its doors to an excited crowd in Norwood Mall in Norwood, Johannesburg.

In fact, the opening was so well received by the public that the opening team had to hold back excited customers at one point in the morning. This was to allow the cashiers to process the customers already in the store and make room in the food emporium for more.

Fruit & Veg City has done it again by creating a real theatre of food. Customers are greeted by an array of colourful fresh produce, displayed loose in traditional market style bins. From there, customers go past the biltong bar and into the dry grocery section where Fruit & Veg City’s private label range, Freshers, is given most of the shelf space. A full butchery offers prepacks and counter service and the deli brings a delicious display of international cheeses and cold meats to the fore with taste testers especially for the opening. Customers crowd around the seafood department as staff members keep adding to the fresh fish display on ice.

A wide selection of cold and hot prepared foods is available on two islands in front of the rest of the baked and prepared goods area. Tables are laden with freshly baked goods to tempt customers as they near the communal queue system.

The store then opens up to the restaurant which acts as a standalone department in the middle of the mall. Norwood has a large Jewish community and as a result, customers can choose to order from the separate Kosher kitchen. A separate butchery and deli department has also been created in-store to cater for Kosher specifically.
The store is definitely worth a visit and it will be interesting to see how Woolworths Food and Pick n Pay Hyper, tenants of the same mall, up their game to compete with this fresh new shopping experience.
